What is a PES file? (and when to use DST instead)

PES and DST are the two embroidery formats StitchConvert includes in every download. They serve different roles on your machine and in your software.

What a PES file contains

A PES (Brother) file stores stitch data plus thread-color information for many home embroidery machines and software packages.

If you use Brother embroidery software or a Brother-compatible workflow, PES is usually the file you open first because colors appear on screen.

What a DST file is for

DST is a universal stitch format. Almost every commercial and home machine can sew from DST, but the file does not store thread names or colors—only stitch paths and color-change stops.

That is normal. Assign thread colors manually in your software when using DST, or rely on the PES file when you want on-screen color previews.

Why StitchConvert gives you both

Every paid download is a ZIP with both .pes and .dst so you can use whichever format your machine or software prefers without converting again.

Upload a PNG or SVG, preview the stitch count and thread list, then download once you are satisfied with the preview.
